12 Lead ECG Interpretation Course

Interpretation of a Myocardial Infarction

This course teaches you how to quickly and accurately interpret a 12 lead ECG to identify a myocardial infarction. The course has been developed at the request of Nursing colleagues who have previously attended one of our live Telemetry Seminars and is applicable to all Nurses who want to upskill their knowledge of ECG interpretation.
CPD Hours: 4

This course is ideal for:

Any Nurse working in critical care, coronary care or emergency departments as well as general ward areas and medical practices. It is designed not only for the critical care areas, but ideal for the Nurse in a telemetry ward or any Nurse who performs a 12 lead ECG as part of their role.

Nurses in all areas of clinical practice require knowledge and skills in the area of ECG Interpretation. With the changing health environment, the introduction of ward-based telemetry units, acute cardiac patients now being managed in general care areas and acutely unwell patients presenting at community based medical practices, highlights the benefit of the knowledge you will acquire by undertaking this course.

Other health-care professionals who perform an ECG as part of their role are also welcome to enroll.

You will learn:

  • to review the cardiac complex: waves, segments and timing intervals and demonstrate the understanding of the foundation of interpretation of sinus rhythm and abnormal arrhythmias.
  • to demonstrate skills in the 12 lead ECG interpretation and be able to recognise changes related to acute coronary syndrome
  • to become proficient at interpreting a myocardial infarction.
  • to demonstrate expert knowledge of the potential complications that may be associated with a specific myocardial infarction.

Modules included in this Course:

  • Module One: Introduction to the interpretation of sinus rhythm and foundation principles
  • Module Two: Interpretation of a 12 lead ECG
  • Module Three: Advanced interpretation of an acute myocardial infarction.

In this Course you will:

  • learn to interpret an acute myocardial infarction quickly and accurately in a patient with signs and symptoms of suspected acute coronary syndrome.
  • learn the essential skills of interpreting an acute myocardial infarction.
  • understand that the longer a coronary artery remains blocked the greater the amount of cardiac muscle that is damaged.
  • learn that once an infarction is even several hours old, much of the damage is permanent.
  • acknowledge that Nurses are often the first healthcare professionals to assess patients who present with signs and symptoms of an acute myocardial infarction and recognise the presentation on an ECG.
  • learn that this ensures early diagnosis leading to timely treatment and reperfusion of the occluded coronary artery.

- Karen | Telemetry 2022

"Omg Anne, words cannot explain how easily you describe ECG and how easy you make it to remember."

- Liz | Telemetry 2022

"It was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed the presenter [Anne] and the manner in which she presented the content. I would really recommend it to everyone."

- Anne | The Deteriorating Patient | New Zealand

So glad I attended this workshop, I learnt more in 2 days than I have in years trying to teach myself, it finally makes sense and I still remember it. Thank you, Anne, you have a gift and are a sensational educator.”

Why Anne thinks all Nurses should do this course

“Not every Nurse is able to attend face-to-face lectures or seminars, and I wanted to create a course that was available at all times for busy Nurses. My goal was to create a course that was different from others available in the market. I have been teaching interpretation of arrhythmias and 12 lead ECGs for many years and have found it to be more effective when it is interactive.

I like to add a bit of humour into the important concepts to make it interesting and to influence Nurses to become experts at reading ECGs and rhythms and also assist them to develop confidence in their knowledge. Nursing CPD has worked with me to develop the interactive format of this ECG course allowing me to assist the students as they progress through many of the exercises.”

This course is for:

  • The Nurse in coronary care, critical care, emergency and cardiothoracic units. Every Nurse in these specialist areas must have expert cardiac knowledge.
  • Nurses working in other areas such as dialysis, managing patients with diabetes, surgical wards, medical units, rehabilitation units to name a few where staff will find these co-morbidities existing in a large number of their patients.
  • All Nurses working with patients with both acute and chronic illnesses, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and kidney disease are the three most common illnesses in Australia. These three diseases often occur together.
  • Nurses working in the area of telemetry. The growth of telemetry in both specialist units and general ward situations has heightened the Nurse’s responsibility to ensure their knowledge regarding cardiac arrhythmias and ECG interpretation is current and reflects best practice guidelines.
  • Psychiatric Nurses, Midwives, and Nurses working in general practice areas where ECG's are often taken and left for someone else to interpret.

You will also learn:

  • How to quickly interpret a 12 lead ECG in three easy steps
  • The common errors that are made in performing a 12 lead ECG
  • The warning signs of an acute myocardial infarction
  • How to recognise a patient deteriorating with a cardiac disorder
  • How to recognise the leads associated with different myocardial infarctions
  • How a patient with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) presents and the gender issues on presentation
  • To interpret a 12 lead ECG identifying angina, anterior and inferior STEMI
  • The foundation of interpretation of sinus rhythm
  • The cardiac complex: waves, segments and timing intervals
  • How to interpret deterioration of a monitored patient
  • Confidence in recognising an acute MI
  • The complications of an anterior and inferior myocardial infarction
  • To place an ECG on the right side of the chest
  • A serious complication of an inferior myocardial infarction
  • SCAD – Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection

Frequently asked questions:

Q. Who is this course for?
A:  Any nurse working in critical care, coronary care, emergency departments as well as the general ward areas. It is designed not only for the critical care areas, but ideal for the nurse in a telemetry ward or any nurse who performs a 12 lead ECG for a patient with chest pain.

Q. Who’s the presenter?
A: Anne Evans-Murray – R.N., BHlthSc, MACCCN, Grad.Dip Ed, MEd, Dip Counselling, GradCertCritCare, CertIV Training and Assessment, and CertIV in Mediation

Q. How will this help me in my career?
A: The changing environment in health has led to lack of access to advanced care settings such as critical care units as they may not be available. Therefore, nurses in all areas require both basic and more advanced clinical knowledge and skills in this area of care to manage these patients across a range of clinical settings.
