Code of Conduct

In this webinar we will look at the Code of Conduct for Nurses and Midwives. It is vital that we understand and embrace the Code of Conduct under which we practice. The Codes establish the legal obligations, professional conduct, and behavioural standards for Nurses and Midwives across all practice environments in Australia.

Course Content

The codes establish the legal obligations, professional conduct, and behaviour standards for Nurses and Midwives across all practice environments in Australia. They outline the core principles of professional behaviour essential for safe practice and detail specific standards that Nurses and Midwives are expected to integrate into their work.

The Code of Conduct for Nurses and the Code of Conduct for Midwives share several key characteristics. Both codes are organised around seven principles, each including a values statement and practical guidance on applying them in practice.

These principles are divided into four domains. The term "person" refers to individuals in a professional relationship with a nurse, while "woman" pertains to those in a professional relationship with a midwife. The codes are designed to apply to all nurses and midwives across every practice area and are based on evidence-based practices. They are to be read in conjunction with the NMBA standards, codes, and guidelines.

Whilst the Code sets out the legal framework for practice, it also provides Nurses and Midwives a foundation document that can be used in discussion and debate with employers to ensure that safe practice standards are met in the workplace and the best possible outcome is provided for the client.
