Course Content

All health professionals must understand the medical terminology and the breakdown of words to assist in multidisciplinary communication. Understanding medical terminology helps with accurate interpretation and conveying of complex information, ensuring clear and effective communication.

Nurses are responsible for documenting patient information, treatments, and observations. Correct use of medical terminology ensures that the records are clear, precise, and standardised, which is essential for continuity of care and legal purposes.

A clear understanding of medical terms allows nurses and health professions to correctly interpret and understand patient conditions, and administer appropriate treatments or medications. Nurses often explain medical conditions, procedures, and treatments to patients and their families. A solid understanding of medical terminology allows them to break down complex concepts into understandable terms, improving patient comprehension and involvement in their care.

This interesting webinar examines the breakup of medical words, and shows you how to work out the meaning of medical words even if you are unfamiliar with them. By just applying a few simple steps you can work out what the word means. Medical terms are broken into word parts which makes it easier to understand and you can apply these steps to assist you when you don't have knowledge of the condition. By breaking down medical terms into their components nurses can more easily understand and memorise complex medical concepts, empowering them to be more effective in their roles

These word components (or parts) include: Prefixes, word roots and suffixes. Most medical terms have a fixed structure of a prefix, a root, and a suffix. In this webinar the presenter will work with you showing you how to examine words, break them up and look at each part. To make it interesting the presenter will present a scenario of a woman with chest pain, and then work your way through the provision diagnosis, and the tests required to arrive at the correct diagnosis followed by the appropriate treatment.

A 66-year-old female presents with chest pain to the Emergency Department, she presents with precordial discomfort, dyspnoea, and tachycardia. Her tentative diagnoses are: Arrhythmias, Angina or Myocardial Infarction. This patient requires urgent review and further investigations. You will walk through the assessment, diagnosis examining the breakdown of the words, making it so easy to use the tips and relate this to other conditions. For example where did that unusual word 'infarction' come from, or how is atherosclerosis broken down into components?

This webinar Provides vital information for all Nurses - from the new post graduate to the more experienced Nurse. It will enhance your confidence in the understanding and utilisation of medical terminology.
