Mental Status Examination (MSE)

It is envisaged that participants will leave this webinar with a good understanding of how to incorporate the MSE into their clinical practice wherever they work. Once the MSE is embedded in practice health professionals are more able to quickly assess and thus respond to patients mental health needs. This session emphasizes the practical utility of the MSE whilst ensuring participants grasp its theoretical underpinnings.

Course Content

In this presentation, we will explore the critical role of the Mental Status Examination (MSE) in nursing practice. The MSE is a structured tool used to assess a patient’s cognitive, emotional, and psychological functioning.

Nurses, who are often the first to notice changes in a patient’s mental state, play a key role in conducting the MSE, which allows for early intervention and improved patient outcomes.
We will cover the essential components of the MSE appearance, speech, mood, thought process, cognition, and more illustrating how each part helps in creating a holistic understanding of the patient’s mental health. Ultimately, this presentation aims to empower nurses to take an active role in mental health advocacy and patient safety, emphasizing the vital connection between mental and physical well-being.
