Course Content

In this presentation, we will explore the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), one of the most widely used tools in clinical practice for assessing cognitive function. The MMSE is a brief, structured interview that evaluates several domains of cognitive function, including orientation, memory, attention, visuospatial skills, and language. It provides clinicians with a quick and reliable measure to screen for cognitive impairments, such as those seen in dementia, delirium, and other mental health conditions.

We will begin by discussing the historical background and development of the MMSE, including its original intent and clinical applications. Attendees will gain insight into the scoring system and interpretation, as well as the strengths and limitations of the tool. Special attention will be given to how MMSE results can guide further diagnostic workup, monitoring of disease progression, and treatment planning.

The presentation will also address cultural and educational considerations when using the MMSE in diverse populations. We will explore modifications and alternatives for individuals with language barriers or low literacy, ensuring ethical and equitable use of the tool.
Through demonstrations, participants will learn how to administer the MMSE effectively and interpret scores in context. The goal of this session is to equip healthcare professionals with practical skills for applying the MMSE in everyday clinical settings, enhancing their ability to detect early cognitive decline and improving patient outcomes.

Why this session may be relevant to your work

All nurses need to know how to assess for cognitive deterioration. The application of the mini mental state examination is a core clinical skill that needs to be reviewed routinely to ensure correct application.

Learning Outcomes

In this session you will:
  • Discuss the purpose of an MMSE
  • Explain how to use an MMSE
  • Explain the scoring of an MMSE
  • Discuss the importance of documentation of MMSE process
